Some People's Parents

This is one of the most bizarre things I have ever heard. new Zealand is seeing a rise in strange names for children. No I don't mean names like Shequanna, Seven, Apple, or any of the other names we hear and think "that's odd". Those all sound normal compared to Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii. Yep, that was her name.

Nine year old Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii is the subject of a custody dispute, and has won the right to change her name due to social stigma. That's not the only strange name either. Others include Number 16 Bus Shelter, Violence, and twins named Benson and Hedges.

I dunno. I think it's the parents' right to name their kids what they like. I can see the point that these are over the top, but is it really so bad that the child should be placed in the guardianship of the court?

  1. My spin on this entire name issue is that people lack the ability empathize. What may be seen as a creative statement, to some, maybe an insult to others. Governments ability to intervene has no limits. Who said life has to be fair, its all subjective.

  2. true. It has given me inspiration though. I wonder if Fee Fie Fo and Fum are taken, and how hard it is to have quadruplets?

Actually I can see both sides of it. That has to seriously hurt a person's career potential. Who are we to judge though. It is a parent's right to pick a name.

Look how well Moon Unit Zappa turned out.

  5. @Yoga I guess it's not really that big a deal, but I just try to imagine going through life with a name like that. The part that surprised me is that the judge has given custody of the child over to the courts until her name is changed per her request.

@flowers, If you could post a link, or send it to me I would be happy to add a reference to the article.

Thanks for the comments. Hope to see both of you again.
